What is Love?

According to Google, love is defined as an intense feeling of deep affection or a great interest and pleasure in something. It encompasses a feeling of profound attachment and care for someone. Love is a powerful and multifaceted emotion that spans a wide spectrum of positive mental and emotional states. It is a strong sense of closeness, care, and commitment to another person.

What Do I Think Love is?

Growing up, I experienced love primarily through family and friends. My first experience of love was through my parents—in how they loved my siblings and me, as well as the love they shared between each other. For me, love is best represented in a verse from the Bible:

"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth."

—1 Corinthians 13:4–8a (ESV)

This verse has given me a deeper understanding of love beyond my family. While I find it can apply to familial love, I mostly look to this passage as a guiding perspective on romantic love. The qualities it describes patience, kindness, humility, and rejoicing in truth reflect the type of love that builds, nurtures, and strengthens relationships, whether they are romantic or rooted in friendship or family.
